There is nothing better than a nice stroll on a crisp autumn day, the smell of the leaves, the breeze brushing your face and you listen to the birds on Fergus Island. A smile forms on your face as you anticipate the greeting of friendly faces, a warm fire and toutons. Ok I got your attention!! Our “Toutons and Tunes” walking tour is still on going in Bay Roberts , just a short drive down Water Street to Crane’s Hill turn off. Every Sunday (2 pm) for the month of October Lois Dawe will be waiting to take you on a interpretative walking tour. The walk takes you through the old road way leading to properties that have long since been deserted but the foundations and cellars remain. Lois will talk about the trail and its history before arriving to a restored fisherman’s shed that is our interpretative venue for the trail. Our fiddler Mackenzie will greet you with a tune and Julia will be happy to make a touton and tell you its importance in our culinary culture.
Tourism in the bays do not have to stop when summer is over, we have amazing coastlines and scenery in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. We are developing authentic product to celebrate and profile our culture. Please take the time to visit our communities, and experience NL during our shoulder season. On the Baccalieu Trail, our Visitors Information Centre in Bay Roberts will remain open for the year to direct tourists to the many destinations and events that are still in operation during the “off season”. Please drop by and experience this special facility, the interior changes with the seasons and hosts many programs for young and old alike. Halloween and Christmas are especially a fantastic time to visit the Centre.
